Holiday Food - How to Enjoy Without Harming Your Smile

The holidays are here, which means tasty treats and mouth-watering meals around every corner. From Halloween to New Year’s, it’s hard to miss the abundance of candy, baked goods, festive drinks, and hearty main courses that make an appearance at nearly every social gathering. 

With all of these delicious options available, it’s normal to feel a little worried about your waistline. What many people don’t consider, however, is the impact that holiday indulgences can have on their oral health. 

Luckily, with a little prep and planning, it’s possible to enjoy your favorite holiday foods without harming your smile. Keep these Kuras Dental Health Associates tips in mind the next time you’re faced with a buffet table of temptations:

Drink Plenty of Water

It’s always a good idea to drink lots of water, but upping your water intake during the holidays can provide extra protection for your teeth. Water helps wash away food debris and reduces the build-up of acids that can destroy your tooth enamel. Additionally, when you fill up on water, you will naturally drink fewer sugary beverages.

Eat Desserts and Treats With Your Meals

Every time you eat a sugary treat, your mouth “cleanses” your teeth to discourage bacteria from sticking around. If you continuously graze on peppermint bark and sip on your family’s favorite punch all night long, you’re hurting your teeth more than you need to. When you are going to indulge, do so in one sitting. Finish your entire drink or serving of dessert, and then pop in a piece of sugar-free gum or brush your teeth in the bathroom. The more frequently you expose your teeth to sugar, the worse off they will be.

Be "Choosey" 

Since you know many holiday goodies will be sticky, sugary, and gooey, it’s a bad idea to say “yes” to every single one. It’s ok to eat and drink your favorite treats this time of year, but be selective where you can. Save your teeth from unnecessary attackers by only choosing the best snacks offered rather than indulging every single time

Keep Brushing and Flossing

To protect your teeth against the extra holiday sugar, make sure you are diligent about brushing and flossing. If you can, brush your teeth three times a day instead of two. Carry a travel-size toothbrush and tube of toothpaste in case of airport delays or family parties than run long, and keep a piece of floss in your pocket just in case.
