Conditions that Warrant Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extractions | Kuras Dental Health Associates

Tooth extraction is the process of surgically removing a tooth from the bone completely. Your dentist will help you find the best option for replacement in the event of an extraction. Tooth extraction is required for a variety of conditions including:

  • Decayed teeth: Your dentist will try to treat a decayed tooth with a filling or root canal first, but if your tooth is too damaged, extraction may be needed. The process can vary based on your unique needs.
  • Wisdom teeth: Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common procedures for extraction. Sometimes wisdom teeth can become impacted to other teeth your mouth, pushing them and creating a crooked smile. Your wisdom teeth can also become infected, or they may simply be crowding your mouth. Regardless, many patients require this procedure.
  • Crowded teeth: Tooth extraction is sometimes needed in preparation for orthodontic treatments. If your mouth is over-crowded by teeth, your orthodontist may recommend pulling a tooth to make room for a straighter smile.
  • Infection: If your teeth have been infected, it may require an extraction depending on the severity. Dentists can also use root canal therapy to treat this issue in some cases.

Depending on the nature of your tooth extraction, you can expect to have anesthesia administered, or simply anesthetic to the affected area. Your dentist will then be able to perform the procedure depending on your unique needs. Your dentist will also give you specific instructions on the recovery process, which often includes a limited diet during the healing process, as well as a modified cleaning procedure.

Replacement options for extracted teeth can include bridges, which cover the gap between your teeth with a bridge attached to the surrounding teeth. You may also have the option for partial dentures, or for a dental implant. Dental implants are titanium posts that are implanted to your jaw. After the healing process, you'll receive a custom crown that will be attached to the implant. This is a popular choice because it is very durable, and dental implants look and feel like natural teeth.
